Committee to take evidence on the policy landscape for long-duration energy storage
The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will hold its sixth evidence session for its inquiry into long-duration energy storage.
The Committee will hear from witnesses from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the Climate Change Committee.
The session will focus on the policy landscape supporting long-duration energy storage deployment in the UK. Members will seek to understand which targets the Government currently has that support the development of long-duration energy storage, what policy measures are currently being taken to support the development of business models for long-duration energy storage, and the role that ongoing policies such as the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements and the establishment of the Future System Operator will play in supporting a resilient, decarbonised energy system. They will seek to determine whether the Government is on track with its own policy targets and whether it is responding to the recommendations from the Committee on Climate Change, and whether any policy changes are needed to support long-duration energy storage being ready by 2035.

Possible question areas
- What role does the Government feel long-duration energy storage ultimately play in a fully-decarbonised grid?
- What policies are currently in place or in development that will support long-duration energy storage?
- Is the Government on track for achieving its targets for hydrogen transportation and storage, green hydrogen production, and a decarbonised electricity system more broadly?
- To what extent should the Government set out how it wants a Net Zero energy system to look in order to enable the appropriate levels of investment?
- What role will new bodies such as the Future System Operator and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero itself play in leading on the deployment of long duration energy storage?
