Prime Minister’s representative to AI Summit questioned on UK approach to regulating Artificial Intelligence

Last week global government and tech leaders convened in the UK and issued an initial declaration of unity and co-operation on one major area of future risk: the development of “frontier AI” that is raising concern over potentially existential threats.

But the Committee’s August interim Report on the governance of artificial intelligence set out twelve challenges that must be addressed by policymakers to tackle the real world effects of AI right now, including the proliferation of misinformation and harmful material online.

On Wednesday the Committee will question Matt Clifford, the Prime Minister’s representative at the Bletchley Park AI safety summit and Emran Mian, Director General of Digital Technologies and Telecoms at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, on the UK’s latest position and direction forward for regulating and safely optimising AI technologies - including the response to the Government’s white paper consultation, expected this year.

Urgent concerns include the exacerbation of existing biases in the development of AI, misrepresentation, the proliferation of discriminatory and misleading material, and whether AI models and tools should be open-source or proprietary.
