MPs question Premier League and EFL bosses Richard Masters and Rick Parry on deadlocked financial negotiations between leagues

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee question Richard Masters from the Premier League and the EFL’s Rick Parry on the latest on a financial agreement between the top of the English game and the rest of the football pyramid.

Meeting details

At 10:00am: Oral evidence
Work Football governance follow-up (Non-inquiry session)
Chief Executive at The Premier League
Chair at English Football League

This session follows reports in December of a stalemate between the Premier League and the English Football League over an agreement to redistribute funds between leagues (the ‘New Deal’). It also follows the Government’s announcement of a new independent football regulator which can act on issues of financial regulation compliance.

The cross-party Committee could seek to understand reasons for the delay in agreeing a financial statement between leagues. Questions could also be asked on the Premier League’s position on parachute payments as a form of financial distribution, and the implications of a ‘no deal’ on EFL clubs.

MPs are likely to ask about the new independent regulator and what role its impending introduction has played in holding a financial agreement back. The Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, action the leagues have taken to find a dedicated broadcast slot for women’s football and the Committee’s recent report on Safety at Major Sporting Events could be discussed.
