The Communications and Digital Committee continues its inquiry into large language models (LLMs) as it takes evidence from experts on the merits of open versus closed models, options for safety testing and audits, and implications for digital competition.

Background

The Committee is looking at large language models and what needs to happen over the next 1–3 years to ensure the UK can respond to their opportunities and risks.

Possible areas for discussion

Areas for discussion with witnesses include:

  • the appropriate policy responses to open and closed source AI models;
  • implications for the balance of power, safety and competition;
  • how safety testing and auditing systems would work, and
  • what lessons can be learned from other sectors with experience of complex safety and liability issues
