Committee to take evidence on the investment environment for long-duration energy storage

The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will hold its fifth evidence session for its inquiry into long-duration energy storage.

The Committee will hear from Michael Liebreich, Chair and CEO at Liebreich Associates, a long-time investor in climate solutions.

The session will focus on the potential business models that could apply to long-duration energy storage projects. Members will seek to understand what would be required to make long-duration energy storage viable for investors to take interest in, and the potential roles that hydrogen could and should play in a decarbonised economy. They will ask what role the Government should play in setting an overall strategic direction for the energy system, including provision for a strategic reserve of energy generation.

Possible question areas

  • What role will long-duration energy storage ultimately play in a fully-decarbonised grid?
  • What relative roles should the private sector and the state take in providing the relevant amounts of long-duration energy storage, including a strategic reserve for contingencies?
  • What role would hydrogen have in a Net Zero energy system?
  • To what extent should the Government set out how it wants a Net Zero energy system to look in order to enable the appropriate levels of investment?
  • How can policymakers design a viable business model for long-duration energy storage projects?
