Minister Mark Spencer to be quizzed on soil health
The Minister for Food, Farming and Fisheries, Mark Spencer, will be asked about the degraded quality of soil health in England – and how the Government is supporting farmers to improve it - in the final evidence session of the Committee’s inquiry into the issue.
Meeting details
Minister Spencer is likely to be asked whether soil health is at the heart of Government farming subsidies and environmental strategies. This may include discussion of its plans for reducing the use of artificial fertilisers and pesticides, and how the wider supply chain, including consumers, might play a role.
The Committee may also explore whether soils need better legislation to protect them and how the Government intends to build the evidence base to make this possible. The role of the private sector in financing the delivery of soil health could also be explored.
