Threat from avian flu to be examined by MPs

The Science, Innovation and Technology Committee will examine the status of the avian flu outbreak in birds and explore the public health threat of the H5N1 strain in the UK.

The second session of the emerging diseases and learnings from covid-19 inquiry will hear from experts on the current biosecurity measures to mitigate both human and animal infections. It will also examine how both the UK and other countries are preparing for potential cases of human-to-human transmission.

The previous session of this inquiry heard concerns from experts on the Government’s pandemic preparedness. Professor Sir Peter Horby told the Committee that several research programmes and initiatives set up during the covid pandemic has “not had strategic investment to keep it going.”
