Post Office bosses questioned on Horizon and bonuses
The Business and Trade Committee questions Post Office bosses over a controversial bonus scheme. They are also expected to give an update on the Horizon scandal compensation scheme.
Meeting details
It was reported in May 2023 that Chief Executive Nick Read received almost half a million pounds as a bonus for 2021/22. One of the criteria for the bonus was that the Post Office had fully cooperated with the public inquiry into the Horizon scandal with confirmation from Sir Wyn Williams, the head of the inquiry. The Horizon Scandal left hundreds of sub-postmasters wrongly convicted and some imprisoned.
This was considered as having been met despite the inquiry still being live. Read has since returned the bonus. The 2021/22 Post Office Annual Report suggested that Sir Wyn had signed off the Inquiry metric relating to the bonus, but it was revealed that he had not.
Compensation for the victims of the scandal has also created headlines lately, with reports of higher than anticipated tax bills on lump-sum payments still leaving them out of pocket overall.
