International Development Committee to question Foreign Secretary James Cleverly
In a recent report examining the impact of using the aid budget for spending within the UK, the Committee called on Government to “put the UK’s aid budget beyond the reach of the Home Office and ringfence it to spend in the world’s poorest and most vulnerable countries” – rather than allotting a significant part of it to in-UK spending on refugees - and described the subsequent Government response rejecting that recommendation as “mealy-mouthed”.

The Committee will now question the Secretary of State on his priorities for UK aid, as well as the impact of in-UK spending on refugee costs on the Official Development Assistance (ODA) budget and on the FCDO budget.
The session will also cover issues raised in current and recent IDC inquiries into Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Investment for Development and UK aid to Refugee Host Countries, and current development issues in specific countries experiencing conflict and instability, or experiencing humanitarian crises.
