MPs examine transport poverty in Scotland’s rural communities
The Scottish Affairs Committee hear from transport and infrastructure stakeholders, in the third evidence session of its inquiry on the cost of living in rural communities in Scotland.
Meeting details
This session focussed on the impact of rising transport and fuel costs on Scottish rural and remote communities, including island communities, amid growing concerns of ‘transport poverty’ in these areas.
Giving evidence to the Committee is transport charity Sustrans, whose research finds that Scotland’s rural areas, and in particular the islands, are all at ‘maximum risk’ of transport poverty.
The Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership and the Western Isles Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chair will also give evidence.
Likely topics for discussion include:
- the groups of society most affected by high transport costs
- the unique transport challenges faced by island communities
- how the UK and Scottish governments could address issues of transport availability and high costs.
