Cost of living support payments: Work and Pensions Committee to hold first oral evidence session

MPs question policy experts during the first oral evidence session of the Work and Pensions Committee’s inquiry into the effectiveness of the Government’s cost of living support payments.

The cost of living support payments were introduced by the Government to help those entitled to certain benefits and tax credits with the cost of living, in light of the increase in the cost of food, energy and other essentials.

The first part of the session, featuring representatives from charities and support organisations, will examine the impact of support payments on the general population and specific groups such as pensioners and those with disabilities. Questions are likely to focus on whether the support is reaching those most in need and the effectiveness of payments compared with uplifting benefit levels.

The second part of the session will explore whether alternatives to cost of living payments, such as changes to the tax system, raising Universal Credit and increasing the size of the Household Support Fund, could be more effective in providing support for those in need.
