The situation in Sudan: MPs seek update on growing humanitarian crisis
MPs on the International Development Committee will hear from a commentator and representatives of organisations directly involved in the humanitarian response in Sudan as they seek to understand the context and extent of the situation.
The Committee will explore the impact of long-term aid programming in Sudan and the challenges of delivering immediate humanitarian assistance. It will probe how the UK, working with local and international partners, can help to alleviate the crisis.
Clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted on 15 April 2023 with devastating consequences for civilians. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced and those who remain face rocketing prices for supplies and diminishing facilities.
Meeting details
Access to health care has been severely impacted by the conflict - in Khartoum, only 16% of health facilities operate as normal. Humanitarian access is in jeopardy with attacks on supplies and staff as at least 18 health and humanitarian workers have been killed since the conflict began.
The UK Government is actively involved with nine projects in Sudan, focussed on peace-building, humanitarian response, water, female genital mutilation, de-mining and economic reform. The Committee will explore whether the current crisis was anticipated by the UK’s aid partners and what steps they were taking to stabilise the situation and build resilience among local communities.
