Treasury Committee to question HMRC tax chiefs on abuse of tax reliefs in UK’s tax system
The Treasury Committee questions HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) chiefs on the operation of – and potential for abuse in – tax reliefs.
Meeting details
There is no agreed figure for the number of tax reliefs in the UK, though it is estimated to be over 1,100. The cross-party Committee questions HMRC directors on the number of tax reliefs they believe to be in operation, and their impact on economic growth and the public finances.
The Committee explores whether tax reliefs are open to fraud, error and abuse, and if sunset clauses incentivise or disincentive business investment.
The MPs are also likely to examine the Government’s decision to abolish the Office for Tax Simplification (OTS), which was tasked with simplifying and reducing the number of reliefs.
