Figen Murray questioned on Martyn’s Law
The Home Affairs Committee begins pre-legislative scrutiny of the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Draft Bill on Wednesday 6 June. The draft bill, also known as Martyn’s law in memory of Martyn Hett who was killed in the Manchester Arena bombing, would require entertainment venues to assess and mitigate potential risks to the public from terror attacks at their premises.
In carrying out pre-legislative scrutiny, the Committee will undertake a detailed examination of the draft legislation to understand its likely impact. It will then produce conclusions and recommendations in a report to inform the Government’s final Bill put before Parliament.
Likely areas of questioning
In this session they will hear from Figen Murray, mother of Martyn Hett, who has campaigned for legislation to be introduced to ensure event operators are better prepared to prevent terror attacks and deal with their consequences. The Committee will also hear from representatives of business and night-time industries about their perspective on the new obligations the legislation would place on them.
