Treasury Committee to gather expert views on Bank of England’s quantitative tightening

The Treasury Committee will gather expert views on the Bank of England’s quantitative tightening strategy, its costs to the taxpayer, and the impact of quantitative easing on the ongoing outbreak of inflation at 10.15am on Tuesday 18 April.

Meeting details

At 10:15am: Oral evidence
Inquiry Quantitative tightening
Director at National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR)
Chief Economic Strategist at Netwealth
Chief European Economist at PGIM Fixed Income
Senior Advisor at Cambridge Econometrics, and External Member at Monetary Policy Committee, 2006-11

From February 2022, the Bank began rolling back quantitative easing by no longer replacing maturing gilts, in a process called quantitative tightening. From November 2022, it began actively selling the bonds it had purchased under quantitative easing.

In the first session of its inquiry, the cross-party Committee of MPs will explore the impact of quantitative tightening on inflation, growth, and the financial sector.

The MPs will consider whether quantitative easing had a role in the outbreak of double-digit inflation.

The Committee is also likely to examine whether the Bank has an appropriate strategy and framework for quantitative tightening, and whether there are any successful international or historical examples.
