Chris Philp and Mark Rowley face questions of future of policing
The Home Affairs Committee holds the final evidence sessions of its inquiry into policing priorities as it questions Minister for Crime, Policing and Fire, Chris Philp MP, on Tuesday 25 April and Met Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, on Wednesday 26 April.

The inquiry has examined how policing should balance its crime-fighting functions with its other responsibilities, at a time when policing itself is under intense scrutiny. The evidence sessions are an opportunity for the Committee to question the Government and Commissioner on key issues raised in the inquiry. This will include the challenges faced by policing in rebuilding trust, improving workforce culture and ensuring vetting is adequate to guarantee the highest standards among officers. Sir Mark is returning to the Committee to give evidence for the second time in this inquiry, following Baroness Casey’s Review of internal culture and standards in the Met.
The Committee will also take evidence as part of its inquiry into human trafficking on Wednesday 26 April when it hears from the Andrea Salvoni from the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and Dr Katarina Schwarz, specialist in anti-slavery law and policy at the University of Nottingham.
This session will focus on the UK’s approach to combatting human trafficking, including its current legislative framework and UK Government policy. It will examine how well the UK identifies and supports victims, including the effectiveness of the National Referral Mechanism. The Committee will also examine how well the UK combats the perpetrators of human trafficking and ask what more can be done to improve the number of convictions.
