The benefits of light and noise for human health

The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will hold the third evidence session of its inquiry into the effects of artificial light and noise on human health.

The Committee will hear from three experts on the potential positive health effects of exposure to light and noise: Dr Alison Greenwood, Chief Executive of Dose of Nature; Pierre Geoffroy, Professor of Psychiatry at Université Paris Cité; and Alex Smalley, PhD Fellow at the University of Exeter.

The session will focus on the evidence for beneficial effects of light and noise, the extent to which we understand the mechanisms by which these effects are mediated, the use of a range of environmental exposure treatments to improve mental health and barriers to the widespread adoption of such treatments.

  • The quality of the evidence base for these treatments and what further research is needed
  • How environmental exposure treatments compare to existing treatments
  • Initiatives, both within the UK and elsewhere, making use of these techniques in mental health treatment
