Is the state of our energy networks holding back net-zero? MPs to examine

Energy industry experts give evidence to the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Committee on the role of UK energy network operators in achieving the government’s target of decarbonising the power sector by 2035.

MPs question industry representatives on whether the state of network infrastructure is holding back progress towards net-zero ambitions, and will ask energy regulators Ofgem what it intends to do to ensure the networks are fit for the future.

Meeting details

At 10:15am: Oral evidence
Inquiry Decarbonisation of the power sector
Managing Director at Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution
President at National Grid Electricity Transmission
Chief Executive at UK Power Networks (UKPN)
Chief Executive at Energy Networks Association (ENA)
At 11:15am: Oral evidence
Inquiry Decarbonisation of the power sector
Director of Transformation at National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO)
Head of Markets at National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO)
Director of Infrastructure and Security of Supply at Ofgem
Interim Director of Networks at Ofgem

The oral evidence session is the fourth of the Committee’s Decarbonising the Power Sector Inquiry.

A recent report from the National Audit Office warned that the UK's outdated energy grid is adding to household bills. While the government insists that its commitment to decarbonizing energy networks “remains resolute”, experts say that its delays to a delivery plan will only add to already high consumer bills in future.
