MPs to discuss the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan
Millions of people in Afghanistan face an ongoing humanitarian crisis. Decades of conflict, economic collapse and widespread food insecurity made worse by extreme weather have resulted in desperate conditions for more than half the country’s population.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) predicts that 28.3 million will need humanitarian and protection assistance in 2023. More than half of this number are children.
Meeting details
The Taliban’s ban on women working for NGOs in Afghanistan, resulting in some organisations suspending all or part of their operations, is of deep concern.
The International Development Committee is to hold two evidence sessions to explore the current situation. In this first session, MPs will hear from an Afghan women’s rights activist who has founded a project that provides a platform for Afghan women, and women from two NGOs involved in delivering aid to the country.
