Failed UK satellite launch and future launch prospects to be examined by MPs
The Commons Science and Technology Committee will examine January’s failed UK satellite launch, hearing from the heads of the plane and rocket manufacturer Virgin Orbit and launch site Spaceport Cornwall.
Meeting details
Intended to be the first satellite launch into orbit from UK soil, the launch experienced an anomaly and the satellites never reached orbit. MPs will review the run-up to the delayed launch at Cornwall and what caused its failure as well as explore the future of the UK launch sector.
The Committee highlighted concerns over the licensing process for satellite launches in its November report. It will follow-up on its report with the Civil Aviation Authority and the UK Space Agency and examine what is required to ensure the success of the UK launch sector.
MPs will also hear from Space Forge, one of the companies that lost a satellite through the failed launch. The rocket was carrying payloads for both private companies and government agencies from across the world.
