The new Minister for Development and Africa, Andrew Mitchell MP, will have the opportunity to set out his priorities and approach to aid to the International Development Committee on December 6.
Mr Mitchell was Secretary of State for International Development from May 2010 to September 2012. He has since been critical of the Government’s handling of the merging of the Department for International Development with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2020 and subsequent cuts to aid spending.
The Committee has recently begun to consider the spending of aid funding on refugees in the UK. The inquiry will consider whether spending in this way is an efficient, effective or ethical use of public money.
