The Treasury Committee will hold an evidence session with experts and the Financial Conduct Authority as it continues its inquiry into the crypto-asset industry.
With England heading into the World Cup quarter-finals, football is once again at the top of the nation’s agenda. In the first of two panels, the Committee will hear from investigative journalist Joey D’Urso of the Athletic, who has carried out a series of investigations into crypto fan tokens, particularly those endorsed by footballers.
Meeting details
MPs are likely to discuss the token marketplace, how much money may have been lost to fans through failed token schemes, and explore whether providers should be regulated to better protect consumers.
The Committee will also hear from members of the Financial Services Consumer Panel on the potential risks associated with crypto borrowing, whether such borrowing should be regulated, and the pros and cons for consumers of a Bank of England-issued digital currency.
A second panel will then be held with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Likely topics include the current and future regulation of crypto-assets in the UK, and possible changes to the regulation of cryptoassets pegged to other assets known as ‘stablecoins’. MPs may also discuss the FCA’s actions to protect consumers from the fallout of the collapse of the crypto exchange, FTX.
