The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Michael Fakhri, is to answer questions from the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee as part of its inquiry into UK Food Security.

Mr Fakhri will be asked about the principle of a “right to food” and for his analysis of how nations are meeting the challenges of food security given rising global food inflation. It is likely that questions to Mr Fakhri will also address topics such as agroecology (farming that works with nature rather than relying on fertilisers and pesticides) and recent analyses of food security by the UK government.

Also appearing at the session will be representatives from organisations that provide food banks in the UK, turn surplus food into meals for the needy, and/or lobby the government on food affairs.
