Decarbonising power: Can UK meet 2035 its low-carbon power sector goal?
On 1 November, Energy industry experts, analysts and representatives will give evidence to the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee on whether the goal of generating all the UK’s power from low-carbon is achievable by 2035, and what needs to be done to do it.
Likely areas of questioning
The oral evidence session, the first of the Committee’s Decarbonising the Power Sector Inquiry, is also likely to feature questions from MPs over financing the low-carbon transition.
The sector accounts for just over 20% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. With the Government committed to achieving net-zero by 2050 successfully decarbonizing power will be key to meeting its aims.
Wholesale gas price spikes caused by high demand following the end of Covid-19 lockdowns worldwide and Russia’s war with Ukraine have also exposed vulnerabilities that could be reduced with a different energy mix. The British Energy Security Strategy published in April set out a greater role for nuclear and a push for more offshore wind. MPs are also likely to ask the expert panels how the mix can be optimised.
