UK labour supply inquiry: Academics and other witnesses to give evidence on migration and the international comparisons of the demographic changes in labour supply
On Tuesday 25 October, the Economic Affairs Committee holds its next oral evidence sessions on UK labour supply.
At 3pm, the Committee will hear from Madeleine Sumption, Member of the Migration Advisory Committee and Director of the Migration Observatory and Professor Jonathan Portes, Academic at Kings College London.
At 4pm, the Committee will hear from Eliza Forsythe, Assistant Professor, School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois, Tony Wilson, Director at the Institute for Employment Studies and Werner Eichhorst, Coordinator of Labor Market and Social Policy in Europe, IZA.
Some of the topics the committee is likely to cover in these sessions:
- The reduction in the labour force and the possible correlation in migration
- The current operation of the UK visa systems since the EU referendum
- The impact of recent migration trends upon different sectors
- The recent trends for emigration and the impact of this in terms of skills/occupations
- Comparisons of the UK, USA and European labour markets in terms of long-terms sickness and Covid
- Demographic changes in the European and American labour market

Vacancies are still at record levels and above pre-pandemic levels in all industries. The Committee seeks to examine the causes of the reduction in the size of the labour force and which sectors are most affected.
