MPs to question Health Secretary about staffing crisis in NHS and social care
The Committee will question the Rt Hon Sajid Javid in the final session of the inquiry into the recruitment, training and retention of staff. MPs have heard first-hand experiences of the pressures of working with staffing shortages across the NHS and social care in evidence to date.
Likely areas of questioning
The Secretary of State is expected to be questioned about areas relating to the Committee’s ongoing inquiries.
Evidence to the Committee has cited poor workforce planning, weak policy and fragmented responsibilities as contributing to a workforce crisis, exacerbated by the lack of a national NHS workforce strategy. It has been estimated that by 2030/31, up to almost half a million extra health care staff would be needed to meet the pressures of demand and recover from the pandemic – the equivalent of a 40% increase in the workforce.
