Chair of the Committee makes statement on aid cuts

26 January 2021

Following the Written Statement on aid cuts published this afternoon, and the evidence session hearing from the Foreign and Development Secretary, International Development Committee Chair, Sarah Champion MP, said:

“It is deeply concerning that during a global pandemic, and on top of already drastic aid funding cuts due to the fall in GNI, there are further ODA reductions on the horizon.

“If these cuts are rushed through, inevitably poor decisions will result. The Government should be open about the approach it is taking to these reductions so that we can scrutinise the process and criteria and be reassured that recipients and the UK taxpayer will see the best possible value for money from the remaining spend on aid. Without a competent and responsible rationale to what is being cut, with effective risk-management, the UK’s reputation on ODA could be further damaged.

“The Foreign Secretary appeared before my Committee this afternoon, and we heard how funding was being prioritised around the FCDO’s seven global challenges but little was forthcoming on detail. We will be following up in writing to the FCDO to understand more about the cuts confirmed today.”

The evidence session with the Foreign and Development Secretary, Rt Hon Dominic Raab MP, can be watched on Parliament TV.
