UK's record on children's rights considered

8 September 2016

The Joint Committee on Human Rights will hold a one-off evidence session to hear evidence from the Children's Commissioner for England and the Equality and Human Rights Commission about the UN Committee's recommendations and to consider Parliament's role in following up those recommendations.

Witnesses

Wednesday 14 September 2016, Committee Room 1, Palace of Westminster

At 3:15pm

  • Ann Longfield OBE, Children's Commissioner for England
  • Professor Lorna McGregor, Commissioner, Equality and Human Rights Commission and Director of the Human Rights Centre, University of Essex

Background

On 9 June 2016 the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child published its assessment of the UK's record for protecting children's rights.

While the UN Committee welcomed progress in some areas, it made a number of detailed recommendations identifying specific ways in which children's rights could be better protected in the UK.

The Joint Committee has also invited the Children's Commissioner in each of the UK's devolved jurisdictions to supply written comments on these matters, and responses have been published on the Committee's website

The evidence session will also be an opportunity for the Committee to hear about any implications for children's rights of the Children and Social Work Bill, which the Committee is currently scrutinising.
