EHRC and GLA Chairs questioned on human rights and business

27 January 2017

The Joint Committee on Human Rights hears from the Equality and Human Rights Commission and the Gangmasters Licensing Authority as part of its inquiry into human rights and business.

Witnesses

Wednesday 1 February 2017, Committee Room 5, Palace of Westminster

  • David Isaac CBE, Chair of Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC)
  • Margaret Beels, Chair of Gangmasters Licensing Authority (GLA)

Session focus

The Committee questions the witnesses on the most significant human rights issues currently affecting UK businesses, the effectiveness of the Government in dealing with these, and what more can be done to assist businesses to meet their human rights obligations.

The two public bodies play an important role in promoting human rights and employment law in the UK. The Equality and Human Rights Commission safeguards and enforces people's right to fairness, dignity and respect. The Gangmasters Licensing Authority regulates the supply of workers to the agricultural, horticultural and shellfish industries and will soon have its remit expanded to investigate other sectors when it becomes the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority.
