Justice Secretary questioned on Government’s approach to human rights

The Joint Committee on Human Rights will question Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Shabana Mahmood MP, on Wednesday 30 April in a wide-ranging session examining prominent human rights issues.

The Joint Committee on Human Rights will question Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Shabana Mahmood MP, on Wednesday 30 April in a wide-ranging session examining prominent human rights issues.
The Committee will question the Lord Chancellor on the Government’s approach to human rights and the rule of law. This will include the Government’s view on Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, the right to private and family life, and plans to review its application in immigration cases.
The session may also examine the Government’s plans for criminal justice reform, including reducing the court backlog, sentencing guidelines and IPP sentences. It may look at wider human rights issues including SLAPPs, the Hillsborough Law and the recent Supreme Court judgment relating to the Equality Act and biological sex.
The Committee is also likely to ask questions relating to current inquiry work into transnational repression, forced labour in UK supply chains and accountability for Daesh crimes.
