Lord Alton elected Chair of Joint Committee on Human Rights

The Joint Committee on Human Rights has elected David Alton, Lord Alton of Liverpool as its Chair.

The Joint Committee on Human Rights is a joint committee, comprising members of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. It elects its Chair from among its membership.  

Further information about its programme of work will be announced in the coming weeks. 

Chair comment

Lord Alton said: 

“I am delighted to have been elected as Chair of the Joint Committee on Human Rights. I look forward to working with committee colleagues to scrutinise the work of Government and carry out thematic inquiries into human rights issues. Together we will do our utmost to ensure that human rights considerations are a prominent part of the legislative and policy process.”
