Purpose of the session

As part of its inquiry into serious violence, the Committee is taking evidence on the effectiveness of the Government and police service's activities to counter the recent increase in violent crime. The Committee will take evidence on the changing drug market, from academics and the National Crime Agency, followed by evidence on the police response to knife crime from the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Cressida Dick, and Chief Constable Dave Thompson (West Midlands Police).

The session is likely to cover:

• Changes to the UK and international drug market, including changes in supply and demand
• Drug-related criminality and related NCA activity, including disruptions at the UK border
• Factors that might be driving the increase in knife crime, including school exclusions and county lines
• The effectiveness of the Government's response, and whether new structures or roles are needed at a national level to deal with the problem; and
• The police's response to knife crime, including the impact of funding cuts and the effectiveness of tactics such as stop and search.
