Committee publishes NCA letter

18 December 2015

The Home Affairs Committee has published a letter from Keith Bristow QPM, Director General, National Crime Agency, following up his oral evidence on 8 December 2015.

Chair's comments

Keith Vaz MP, Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee, has made a statement after receiving information from Keith Bristow, Director General of the National Crime Agency, that the Agency has experienced 90 million suspicious events and 178 significant DDoS attacks on its website since October 2013.

Keith Vaz said:

"The extraordinary figures revealed by the National Crime Agency demonstrates the significant challenge, and scale, of cyber-crime today. Modern policing has truly changed.

Following the Chancellor's decision to provide extra funding of £1.9bn for the UK's National Cyber Security Strategy, we need to know how much will be allocated to protecting us from attacks like this.

It is vital that we not only bolster our cyber security, to prevent attacks like the one on Talk Talk earlier this year, but that we are more aggressive in going after cyber-criminals and terrorists using the internet for recruitment, financing and to spread propaganda."
