Chair comment on publication of NHS waiting list data
14 September 2023
Responding to today’s publication of the latest data on July waiting times for hospital care, Health and Social Care Committee Chair Steve Brine MP said:
“It is extremely concerning that the latest figures show that the number of people waiting for hospital treatment has grown by more than 100,000 in a single month. It’s also disappointing that the percentage seen within the 18-week target is down.
“One particular group to highlight are the children and young people who are waiting for paediatric care – the total number waiting has grown by more than 6,000 since June to more than 423,000 and again those seen within the target time is also down. Long waits for care can be particularly harmful for children if they miss the treatment they need at a particular age.
“We’ll be putting our concerns to the Secretary of State when he appears before our committee next month.”
