MPs to hear from grassroot organisations on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

24 January 2025

The Foreign Affairs Committee continues its inquiry into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, hearing from grassroot organisations working in Israel and Palestine on Monday 27 January, at 2pm.

In the Committee’s first evidence session in this inquiry, Alistair Burt said the role of bottom-up peacebuilding efforts was essential. However, in the second session, the Committee heard from witnesses that reconciliation should be a top-down process, arguing that it was too soon for the two communities to work together at the grassroots level.

This session will explore the role of grassroots organisations, hearing from activists working on the ground.

In the first panel, the Committee will hear from Parents Circle Families Forum and Standing Together. MPs will explore what both organisations are doing to bring together Israelis and Palestinians, including those who have lost loved ones in the long-running conflict. The Committee Members are likely to ask what lessons have been learnt and what policy suggestions might be offered to the UK Government to support their work and the communities affected.

In the second panel, the Committee will examine the work of the Alliance for Middle East Peace (ALLMEP) and the Abraham Initiatives. Both organisations have developed programmes of work that involve Israelis and Palestinians to encourage peacebuilding and cooperation. MPs may ask how the recent ceasefire agreement and the new US administration have affected their work.
