EU’s database on NI Protocol rules ‘unilateral’, says Foreign Secretary
21 October 2022
Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has described an EU database listing legislation it considers applicable to Northern Ireland under the Protocol a ‘unilateral’ measure, in a letter to the European Scrutiny Committee.
The Government had ‘not been informed’ of the EUR-Lex database’s launch and has not fed into its contents, Mr Cleverly wrote, adding that the UK reserves the right to have a say on which laws will apply in Northern Ireland.
The letter confirms that the UK is not developing its own version of the European Commission’s database.
Mr Cleverly also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ‘resolving the issues caused by the Northern Ireland Protocol’.
