Academics discuss UK's renegotiation of EU membership

2 November 2015

The European Scrutiny Committee will hold an evidence session on the UK Government's renegotiation of EU membership: parliamentary sovereignty and scrutiny

9.45 am, Wednesday 4 November, Committee Room 6, Palace of Westminster

  • Charles Grant, Director, Centre for European Reform
  • David Green, Director, Civitas
  • Professor Simon Hix, Director of the Political Science and Political Economy Group, London School of Economics

Purpose of session

The purpose of this evidence session is to question the witnesses on:

  • the re-negotiation process
  • the nature of the legal commitments required in order to deliver an outcome that is legally binding and irreversible
  • the political and legal probability of delivering fundamental change in each of the Government's four areas of negotiation — sovereignty, fairness, free movement and competitiveness
