New Chair of Ofgem: ESNZ Committee approves appointment of Mark McAllister

20 October 2023

The Energy Security and Net Zero Committee has approved the appointment of Mark McAllister as Chair of energy regulator Ofgem.

In a short report following a hearing with the candidate on Wednesday, the Committee concludes that Mr McAllister would bring obvious experience to the position and that he demonstrated a good understanding of the role of Ofgem and the responsibilities of the Chair.

Angus Brendan MacNeil MP, Chair of the ESNZ Committee, said:

“Mr McAllister impressed the Committee with his understanding of the many challenges ahead for Ofgem and the role of a Chair in encouraging, challenging and replacing within an organisation. We hope Mr McAllister’s appointment can be the catalyst for a more intelligent Ofgem that works in the best interests of consumers so they can have greater trust in their energy suppliers. We wish Mr McAllister every success in his new position and look forward to working with him.”

Following the endorsement of the Committee, it is now down to the Government to confirm the appointment.
