Nominations open for Chair of new Select Committee on Energy Security and Net Zero

28 March 2023

The Government’s recent changes to the machinery of Government established a new Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The House of Commons has now agreed to create a new Select Committee to examine the spending, policies and administration of the Department.

Select committee chairs are allocated according to party. The Order of the House of 27 March 2023 has allocated the Chair of the Committee to the Scottish National Party. Only a Member of the SNP may stand for election although all Members of Parliament are able to vote in the election process.

The Speaker has now announced the timetable for the election of the new Chair. Nominations are now open and will close at 5pm on Monday 24 April.

To be valid, nominations must contain a signed statement made by the candidate declaring willingness to stand and must be accompanied by the original physical signatures of five Members elected to the House as members of the Scottish National Party. Nominations may be accompanied by the signatures of no more than five Members elected to the House from other political parties or independent Members. Members may not sign the statement of more than one candidate.

If there is only one candidate, the Speaker is likely to announce the result that day.  If more than one nomination is received, a ballot will be held between 11am and 2.30pm on Wednesday 26 April. The Speaker would announce the results in the Chamber later that day.

Valid nominations received on sitting days will be printed in the next day’s business papers of the House. They will also be published on the Parliament website along with the candidate’s supporting statement, signatories and any declared interests.
