Energy Security and Net Zero Committee

In this second session of its inquiry into community energy, the Committee will question local energy suppliers and energy major OVO on making community energy financially viable and unlocking local energy supply.

Evidence in this inquiry has revealed the scale of the challenge to create the UK workforce to deliver the Clean Energy Mission and to de-carbonise homes and businesses.

The Energy Security and Net Zero Committee is inviting applications from individuals interested in being a Specialist Adviser on its inquiries.

The Energy Security and Net Zero Committee will scrutinise the practice of back-billing by energy companies with Martin Lewis and Ofgem before hearing from the Energy Consumers Minister on this issue and retrofit failures on Wednesday, 19th March.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero states its mission as being “responsible for UK energy security, protecting bill payers and reaching net zero”. Rt Hon Ed Miliband will face Committee questions on the UK’s clean energy transition and progress towards its legally binding target of a net zero economy by 2050.

Commenting on the publication today of the Government’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan Bill Esterson MP, Chair of the House of Commons Energy Security and Net Zero Committee, said:

Minister for energy consumers Miatta Fahnbulleh will make her first appearance at the Committee on Wednesday 4 December, in a one-off session on retrofitting our homes for Net Zero. The UK Government has recently announced changes to its home heating schemes and policy.

The ESNZ committee has written urgently to minister for energy consumers Miatta Fahnbulleh asking her to appear at its hearing in Parliament on the 4 December, after the Government made a sudden announcement overnight of some home heating policy changes and initiatives. 

On Wednesday 4 December the ESNZ Committee will hold a one-off session on retrofitting our homes for net zero.

The Chair of the ESNZ Committee thanks the organisations that came to Parliament to lend their insight to the Committee prior to it setting its first priorities in the new parliament and urges the whole sector to engage with the Committee’s inquires as they are launched.

On Wednesday 20 November the newly reappointed Energy Security and Net Zero Committee will hold its first evidence session in Parliament, looking at the role that Great British Energy (GBE) is expected to play in the energy market.

Community energy, a term for renewable energy projects that are community-owned and controlled, is at the heart of the government’s ambitions for clean power by 2030 and will be central to the future role of Great British Energy through the Local Power Plan.
