Comment: Environment Agency assessment on properties at flood risk
17 December 2024
Reacting to the Environment Agency’s latest assessment of the number of properties in England at risk of flooding, Environmental Audit Committee Chair, Toby Perkins MP, said:
“The Environment Agency’s latest assessment of communities at the greatest flood risk is grim reading, but it does highlight the critically important role of data and modelling to better inform people of their risk so mitigation efforts can be taken.
“While climate change is exacerbating flooding, we can absolutely improve our resilience so householders and business owners can stop flood waters in their tracks. As an MP in an area with a recent history of flooding, I’m constantly aware of the misery such events bring to our communities.
“Our Committee’s inquiry into flood resilience starts in the New Year, and we will be shining a spotlight on these issues: improved monitoring and resilience are going to be our best chance to tackle England’s flood risk.”
