Government responses requested for predecessor Committee’s reports
7 November 2024
Chair of the Environmental Audit Committee has today written to both the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero and the Secretary of State for Transport to request outstanding Government responses to its predecessor Committee’s work.
Read the letters from the Committee Chair on the Government's response to the following Committee's reports from the 2023-24 Parliamentary Session:
- Correspondence: Enabling sustainable electrification of the economy
- Correspondence: Net zero and UK shipping
- Correspondence: Environmental audit in the 2019 Parliament
Following the Committee forming, members are keen to receive Government responses to the reports ‘Net zero and UK shipping’ and ‘Enabling sustainable electrification of the UK economy’, both published in May 2024.
The Committee is also following up on its report, ‘Environmental audit in the 2024 Parliament’, seeking specific responses on a post legislative review of the Environment Act 2021 and to facilitate Parliamentary scrutiny of the Seventh Carbon Budget.
Chair Comment
Environmental Audit Committee Chair, Toby Perkins MP, said:
“Decarbonising the maritime sector and making sure the electricity grid is compatible with our Net Zero goals are huge opportunities. Just this week Neso concluded that although immensely challenging, the Government’s goal to achieve clean power by 2030 is credible but urgent action is required. Ministers need to make the appropriate policy decisions to get this right.
“Significant progress is being made in doubling down on the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. Yet there is still a long way to go to tackle the climate emergency. While the Government of the day has since changed following our predecessor Committee’s reports, these major issues continue to rumble on. Learning how the Government intends to overcome them will be of great interest as our Committee’s work programme takes shape.”
