EAC publishes response from Minister on the fire safety of domestic upholstered furniture

11 January 2024

On 1 December 2023 the Chairman of the Environmental Audit Committee, Rt Hon Philip Dunne MP, wrote to the Minister for Enterprise, Markets and Small Business at the Department for Business and Trade setting out concerns relating to the consultation on the fire safety of domestic upholstered furniture.

EAC has now published the Minister’s response, which confirms the Government’s position. The Minister is unable at present to offer a timetable for the development and implementation of new flammability standards for furniture. He explains why only certain children and baby items are out of scope, and outlines the Government’s proposed steps to ensure consumers are able to inform themselves about the presence, if any, of chemical flame retardants in upholstered furniture.

EAC will now monitor the outcome of the Government’s consultation and consider next steps.
