Specialist Advisers: Expressions of interest

2 August 2015

The Environmental Audit Select Committee (EAC) is inviting expressions of interest from individuals with expertise in UK and/or international environmental or sustainable development policy who wish to be specialist advisers to the Committee.

About the Committee

The EAC is a cross-party select committee of 16 MPs, chaired by Huw Irranca-Davies MP. Its remit is to consider the extent to which the policies and programmes of government departments and non-departmental public bodies contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development. Its work cuts across all Government departments.

As a specialist adviser, you will be working with the Committee secretariat to provide authoritative advice on an ad hoc basis. The majority of advisers are appointed for the duration of a particular inquiry relevant to their area of expertise. A few are appointed on a yearly basis. Only in exceptional circumstances would you asked to do more than two days' work in a particular week. You would be paid a daily honorarium on the basis of work done. Previous experience of offering expert advice in a political environment would be an advantage.

Examples of the types of work you may asked to do include:

  • Commenting on drafts produced by the Committee secretariat;
  • Writing briefing notes for the Committee;
  • Drafting a section of a Committee report;
  • Providing an oral briefing to the Committee.

How to apply

To express interest please send a CV, covering letter and a declaration of relevant interests to the address below. In your covering letter you should give your areas of expertise, an indication of the amount of time you could realistically devote to Committee work and your ability to take on work at short notice if required. Your declaration of interests should include anything that a reasonable person might consider could influence the advice you give the Committee. For example, active membership of a campaign group or relevant financial arrangement. Declared interests from successful applicants will be published.

The Committee will maintain a list of applicants and contact individuals if a suitable opportunity is found. You may be asked to attend an interview before being appointed. Further invitations for Specialist Advisers may be issued by the Committee.

Expressions of interest should be sent to eacom@parliament.uk no later than 24 September 2015. If you have any questions about the role you can contact the Committee team on 020 7219 0715.
