Chair-designate of Environment Agency quizzed by MPs

30 June 2022

The Government’s preferred candidate to be the new Chair of the Environment Agency, Alan Lovell, will be questioned by MPs in a public ‘Pre-Appointment Hearing’ from 2.30 PM on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 in the Wilson Room of Portcullis House in Westminster.

Pre-appointment hearings give parliament an opportunity to question the government’s candidate for significant public jobs. For candidates, such hearings are more of an introduction to scrutiny than a final job interview; for ministers, they are a hurdle to deter inappropriate or unsuitable appointments. On this occasion the hearing will be conducted jointly by MPs on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee and the Environmental Audit Committee.

The Environment Agency is a non-department public body sponsored by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs with responsibilities relating to the protection and enhancement of the environment in England.

Alan Lovell is currently Chairman of the Interserve Group Ltd, Senior Independent Director of SIG plc and Chair of Safestyle UK plc. He has been the Chair of the Consumer Council for Water and works with several charities.
