Sir Robert Goodwill elected Chair of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee

The Speaker has announced that Sir Robert Goodwill has been elected Chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee.

Five candidates were nominated for the role of Chair, triggering an election between:
- Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, Member of Parliament for The Cotswolds
- Sir Robert Goodwill, Member of Parliament for Scarborough and Whitby
- Dr Neil Hudson, Member of Parliament for Penrith and The Border
- Anthony Mangnall, Member of Parliament for Totnes
- Derek Thomas, Member of Parliament for St Ives The supporting statement for the winning candidate is available here.
Sir Robert Goodwill will take up his position with immediate effect and serve to the end of the current Parliament.
The new Chair was elected from the Conservative Party, as agreed by the party leaders following the results of the last General Election.
The procedure for the election of chairs is set out in Standing Orders Nos 122B and 122C. MPs voted by ranking candidates in order of preference and votes were counted under the Alternative Vote System.
The election for the Chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee follows the resignation of Neil Parish as a Member of Parliament on 4 May 2022.

Sir Robert said:
“I am delighted to have been elected Chair of this important Committee. I hope my experience as a working farmer and as a former Agriculture Minister will mean I can hit the ground running.”
