Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration appears before committee

The Justice and Home Affairs Committee is questioning David Bolt CBE, Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration (ICIBI). This session follows up on the Committee’s earlier inquiry into Electronic border management systems.

The Committee will cover a range of topics, including the powers of the inspectorate, the relationship between the ICIBI and the Home Office, small boat crossings and the use of Asylum Hotels. The Committee will also ask about the roll out of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and issues regarding the Common Travel Area (CTA)

Possible questions the committee may ask include:

  • Are the powers of the ICIBI sufficient?
  • How does the ICIBI work with and compare with other inspectorates?
  • How can the success be measured of the ETA?
  • What are the challenges of inspecting borders in relation to the CTA?
  • What are the challenges to ending the use of Asylum Hotels?
  • Does Border Force and the Border Security Command have the capacity to tackle small boat crossings?
