Minister for Europe and North America questioned on UK-EU relations
17 June 2022
The European Affairs Committee will hear evidence from Rt Hon James Cleverly MP, Minister for Europe and North America, on the current state of the UK-EU relationship.
Witness
Tuesday 21 June, Committee Room 4A, Palace of Westminster
at 2pm
- Rt Hon James Cleverly MP, Minister of State for Europe and North America, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office
Background
As part of its scrutiny of matters relating to the UK’s relationship with the EU, the European Affairs Committee periodically holds sessions with the relevant Government Minister to ask questions about the overall UK-EU relationship. This session with the Minister of State for Europe and North America marks the Committee’s first opportunity to hold such a session since it hosted Rt Hon Lord Frost of Allenton CMG, then Minister of State in the Cabinet Office, in October 2021.
This session also follows the Government’s publication on 13 June 2022 of the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill, which would give Ministers the power to amend unilaterally the UK’s responsibilities under the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland. In the course of this session, the Committee will question the Minister on the implications of the Bill, particularly in terms of its impact on the wider UK-EU relationship beyond the Protocol itself.
Areas for discussion
Possible topics include:
- The current state of the UK-EU relationship
- Ministerial responsibilities for Brexit policy matters following Lord Frost’s resignation in December 2021
- The Government’s new legislation on the Protocol on Ireland / Northern Ireland, and the impact of this on other areas of the UK-EU relationship
- UK-EU foreign policy cooperation, including in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine
