DCMS Committee approves appointment of Martin Thomas as Charity Commission Chair

10 December 2021

MPs have confirms the appointment of Martin Thomas as the new Chair of the Charity Commission following his appearance before the DCMS Committee.

In a Report published today, the Committee notes that it was regrettable that like a number of recent public appointments by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, the process for appointing the new Chair of the Charity Commission had been drawn out and subject to allegations of political interference.

The Committee welcomed the commitment from the new Chair to improving the diversity of the Charity Commission Board and of trustees in the wider sector. However, the Report notes that the Government should have worked harder to ensure that applicants better represented diversity.

The previous Chair of the Charity Commission, the Rt Hon Baroness Stowell of Beeston MBE, had been appointed by the Government despite the Committee not considering her a suitable candidate for the role.

Chair's comment

The DCMS Committee Chair Julian Knight MP said:

“It was welcome that as preferred candidate for the role as Chair of the Charity Commission, Martin Thomas said he would consider not taking the post if the Committee determined him unsuitable for the role.

“In so doing, he is one of a growing number of appointees who have recognised the importance of the role of pre-appointment scrutiny by select committees in building public trust in their work.”
