Sir Brian Leveson session cancelled due to judicial review

21 May 2018

Sir Brian Leveson was due to appear before the Committee on Wednesday 23 May 2018 and give evidence as part of the Committee's Fake News inquiry.

In 2012, Sir Brian reported on Part 1 of the Inquiry into the culture, practices and ethics of the press and, in January of this year, responded to a consultation issued pursuant to s.14(3) of the Inquiries Act 2005.  The Government have since announced that it did not intend to proceed with Part 2 of the Inquiry. In addition to debates before both Houses on this issue, last week the Administrative Court granted permission for a judicial review of this decision.

In the circumstances, it would be inappropriate – and contrary to both constitutional convention and established guidance – for Sir Brian to give evidence on issues which could fall within the remit of the judicial review.
